So, what do you guys think Bates is?

Well, I've never bought the whole "spirit of the dead twin" thing, since I believe it was said the twins were girls, and Bates is clearly a guy. I think he's a spirit of some kind, and maybe he was wronged by the Maxwell family and haunts them. Though, it's possible he was one of a set of twins who died.

The way I see it, it's just Alyssa's alternate ego.
Many real people are actually like that, you see Alyssa's the type that cannot harm anyone or anything, and thus left defenseless, she wants to be this "strong guy" who can defend himself and fight back those who try to harm her, and since true courage or power can only be felt/sensed/realized while in true danger, whenever she is in danger, she actually becomes who she wants to be, which is the cruel male, the complete oppiste to what she is.
The amulet gives her the courage and strength she lacks, so when she puts it on, she starts feeling stronger and that deminshes the possibility of becoming the "strong guy"
And the reason for this alternate ego for being a male and cruel, is probably related to the genetics of the maxwell family, since I'm imagining all the Maxwell males to be cruel and evil, hence George himself.
Anyways that's how I see it, I'm not stating this as a fact, just theory.

Maxwell himself was never really portrayed as evil or cruel. His murderous behaviour in the game is the result of the same toxin that made Stephanie go nuts and start trying to kill her own family. He did create the Cerebral Toxin and use it one patients at the hospital, but this was because he was angry at humanity for the curse that had forced him to bury alive his twin girls. He's more disillusioned than anything, I think.
I think it's essentially impossible that Bates is just a simple alter-ego. It wouldn't fit in with the game, and it's apparently something that occurs a lot in the family. Sure, there is genetics, but it seems a bit odd that only twin girls would be afflicted by this curse and all have the same cruel alter-ego. The guide itself suggests heavily that Bates is some kind of spirit. Also, there is the aura that is clearly present around Alyssa when he takes over, and his ability to use that special Millicana amulet to attack bad guys.

Well, his revange against humanity seemed more like the "evil and cruel" thing to me, p.s digging your daughters alive would be very cruel, but oh well.
I don't think the purple aura is really visible IN the game, I mean to the characters, it seemed more like something the game producers put so that the player can tell the difference between Alyssa and Bates, otherwise, you wouldn't see the characters mistaking Bates for Alyssa or being shocked in the very first place, atleast not Phillip or Alen.

In fictional stories, most people don't obviously notice such things. And Allen recognizes Bates right off when they see eachother, if I remember correctly. If he doesn't, remember, he was in a pretty disheveled state.
There's still the Millicana. And Bates just being a simple alter-ego would kind of render the entire game pointless.>_>

Well I cannot argue more.
We can just blame the writers for being so mean, lol.

Just remembered, in the intro cutscene, you see Bates holding up a knife wheres he murdered the guys who were harrasing Alyssa, I don't think any purple aura is seen around.
But then again, in the same clip, you get to see Bates again, given a purple tone, so I dunno -_-

Try the Media section. By the way, why not check out some of the other sections-make an intro thread, offer theories, or ask questions? We need to get this place jumping again! I'd also suggest checking out the fangames. Some of them are pretty cool.

Don't be afraid to post in the Fangames section then, about your own and the thoughts of the ones you played.
Also, I'll need to alter your sig to get rid of that spoiler. And for your other quote, it's "My curse...My cursed past...Wash it away, please.".
